What risks and warning signs should be discussed?
All contouring methods can cause pain, redness, swelling, bruising or palpable nodules. Additional risks vary and may include burns, blisters, prolonged numbness, contour irregularity, nerve or muscle injury, paradoxical enlargement after cooling, infection or tissue injury. Ask which risks apply to the exact method and area.
Emergency symptoms are not routine aftercare
Seek emergency medical help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, collapse or rapidly worsening swallowing difficulty; do not wait for a routine clinic reply. Seek prompt clinical assessment for severe or increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, blistering, skin darkening or breakdown, an asymmetric smile, weakness or persistent numbness. Follow the procedure-specific warning instructions.
Cooling: delayed enlargement is a distinct risk
FDA describes paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) as firm fat growth rather than shrinkage, often shaped like the applicator. Reported cases developed two to five months after fat freezing. It does not go away on its own and may require surgery; surgery may not fully resolve it. Freeze burns and prolonged numbness are other cooling risks.
Energy: heat and tissue injury
RF and light-based heating may cause burns, blisters, nodules or pigment changes; RF can also cause scars. Therapeutic ultrasound can cause burns and nerve damage. Magnetic muscle-stimulation devices have different risks, including soreness and cramps. These categories should not be described as uniformly risk-free.
Injections: the risks are not just bruising
FDA's deoxycholic acid safety communication includes nerve injury, swallowing difficulty, persistent nodules or masses, vascular injury, infection, ulceration and tissue death. FDA also reports permanent scars, serious infections and deformities with unapproved fat-dissolving injections. Do not assume a generic 'fat-burning' label identifies a tested product or appropriate body site.

- Ask for the device or product name and current regulatory status
- Disclose implants, mesh, scars, IUD, tattoos and surgery in the area
- Do not accept treatment over an unexplained lump or active skin problem
